Ugh- two dogs!
I have a senior dog in need of a dental, but because she is only 3.5 pounds, I fear the anesthesia.
I really don't anymore. Or at least, the need for the dental (for getting rid of oral pain as well as for systemic health) would trump my fear nowadays.
If you bump this, I'll link you to some anesthesia articles, and the huge strides made in G/A for dogs in the last decade, and all the ways you can minimize the risks.
I remember being a nervous wreck every time a dog of mine needed G/A. Now I'm not even afraid when it's one of the little flat-face seniors!
From the pre-testing to the BP monitoring and the catheter already in place to the extremely fast-awakening med ..... it's a different world from the one where everyone knew someone whose dog "just didn't wake up from the G/A."
I have read current articles on anesthesia in Papillons, but would be interested in the info you have. Every time I come close to making an appointment, I chicken out.
She is healthy, never a sick visit, but she has reacted to vaccines. Those have been few and far between.

OK, will do, and did you see this about vax alerts?
Quote: Connie Sutherland
One of the pre-procedure things I have done for a long time is to make sure a new sticky note is put on the front of each dog's chart (file) that says "no vax" as a reminder that there's a sheet of special vaccine instructions inside. I do this because the dogs will be out of my sight, staying at the vet's office for a while, as opposed to being with me in an exam room. (The instructions are to the effect that my dogs get no vax, ever, without written permission from me for every time.)
Anyway, they told me that they were implementing a new procedure for this kind of thing: Their files will now be red folders instead of manila. Red folders mean "look for special instructions before you do anything."
Connie, having the charts labeled is a great idea. I have been going to the same vet for over 20 years. The same staff has been there. They know how I feel about vaccines and that I feed raw. I couldn't imagine they would do anything without consulting me.
