I never knew such a procedure even existed.... I am dumbfounded. What is next? cutting off their hamstrings because they run away fast or plucking their eyes out because they chase things that move fast.

Elaine Haynes Webboard User Reg: 08-16-2005 Posts: 1221 Loc: Offline	While I'm not for debarking, although 2 of my collies were partially debarked (not by me), I do understand that at times today especially it seems in the US, it has become amatter of life and death for the dog. Sadly, a dog barks a few times and people complain to the point sometimes that the local animal control threatens to confiscate the dog unless it is debarked. Would I ever have the surgery done? Absolutely not unless it was a choice between that and the dog's life. Of course I believe in training but in today's anti-dog times I can't totally eliminate having to make that decision. And, yes, I do realize that many make that as well as other choices purely for their convenience. I am totally against doing that. "A dog wags his tail with his heart." Max Buxbaum

Ironically part of the success of the surgery depends on keeping the dog quiet while it heals or so I hear. A tired dog is a good dog, a trained dog is a better dog.

The boys because my Pointer regularly scaled a 6ft hedge to find the neighbours Labs who seemed to be FOREVER in heat, and the girls because I didn't want the boys driven demented and always after them. I have never regretted having them all seen to, and never considered it inappropriate for my own circumstances. As for debarking - sometimes wish Kaiser had a mute button, but would NEVER consider surgery! And dewclaws, well one of my Pointers, that I got as a 6 month old pup was de-clawed at a few days old; I don't have a problem with them keep, other than the obvious damage they can do to each other, and on occasion, me! Neutering, well its a horses for courses situation, each to their own.

There is no other so-called elective surgery I can imagine doing, although I do understand Betty's post. Once again, Betty has flashed a light into a corner that we may not readily see. I train no-bark. But I know that many (most?) dog owners own untrained companion dogs.

Perhaps the dog begins to think that the barking "brings" the owner home. I personally have never preformed this procedure and it wasn't done routinely at our clinic. I know a Dobe with full floppy ears and tail, and we have a conformation Rottie in our SchH club that is uncropped, as well. We also have a member who breeds pedigreed Pits, and he doesn't dock any of his dogs Sadie
