Today the girls got to play in the living room for about 10 minutes and things went well. Shelby doesn't have the stamina for wrestling that she used to, so I had to separate them when she laid on the dog bed and River kept pestering her to play. They both got peanut butter Kongs and we'll try again tomorrow
BIL and husband had a talk today about the dogs. I didn't listen in, but as I was walking out the front door I heard 'man tones' coming from BIL's bedroom where they were at.
Hope for all your sake....hubby was able to instill some sense into his brother.
Take is very slowly with the dogs. There may very well be a 'honeymoon' period & then the real life of everyday living. Even if it takes weeks of SLOW increaing of time together, it is a positive step forward. One fight & you may not ever get them to live side by side in peace again. So slow small steps in worth the wait to get it to work.
Just another report - Shelby and River are getting along fantastically. They've graduated to both being in the living room with us and I've started allowing them to chew cow hooves in the same room since neither of them care about stealing the other dog's hoof. In fact it's kind of funny, they're both almost paranoid about making the other dog uncomfortable about chews or the water dish. They both respect each others space and have no intention of causing a scene. I don't leave the room when they're chewing unless I pick them up, but so far so good

Congratulations!
PS
You might want to rethink the chewies. I think that many members here can attest to the fact that high-value food items are the top trigger for dog fights among dogs who live in the same house. It can be (and usually is) extremely fast, with the human not even realizing that one dog has eyeballed the other dog's item until the other dog has leapt at him.
Not taking anything at all away from your hard work and good accomplishments.
Again, good work! But I can't in good conscience neglect to point this out.
Chewies are a source of frustration for many dogs, but neither Shelby or River have the personality to care much about them. With years of experience managing dog aggressive and food possessive dogs, I feel comfortable allowing them to be occupied with supervision. I totally understand the concern, though. I fully expect things to change as River matures and will keep a constant eye on them.
As for the brother inlaw, I wouldn’t bother to entertain a family member/other with flowery speeches on the why/why not of how I handle my dogs.
Sometimes, IMO, they enjoy getting a rise from you, the negative dog interaction can be more about p*ssing you off,+ clueless. I would just
continue to keep the dog away.
