I'm glad you said more too, Tony, because your OP triggered a blizzard of worried PMs and emails.
I'm very relieved. Anne is spot on when she says that the worst horror stories tend to start with a post like yours (but the person making the post has zero experience and sometimes zero brain).
I can't wait to hear about (and see) the new pup, too.

"I'm another one of those "old dogs" Anne is talking about. I've used most every method out there and the one thing I can say about the past 8-10 yrs with marker training is that it was a HUGE epiphany for me. "
Couldn't have said it better. How in the name of anything did it take so long? It seems so
obvious!
Yeah, my wife says I need to be a better communicator too but that's for another forum <g>
This pup so far has exceeded my expectations by a large margin. The day after I brought him home I had him out front to do his business. A neighbor across the street came out and got into his car. This pup, 8 weeks old, turns, postures up and let out a growl that surprised the heck outta me. When the car pulled out of the drive way he got very vocal, while at the end of his leash. No way the dog could pick up any territorial behavior that quickly! He had only been at my house about 10 hours! This dog has unrelenting prey drive. He certainly going to be a fun challenging dog!
Careful! With a pup that young it could be nerves.
Not to say it is for sure just don't allow it for now. If the dog truly has what it takes to be a home protector it will develop.
Even a strong pup should be social at a young age.
I agree Bob. It just surprised the heck out of me! I just redirect him with no emotion or verbal. I was talking to his breeder and she said his lines have tons of defense drive and that it will come on it's own. It is pretty amazing when you finally get a dog with all the "right stuff" as a puppy and its so obvious.
