Hot beeswax is often used on wood salad bowls. It's a good non-toxic finish.
Be careful with some of the boiled linseed oil preparations -- they contain metallic drying agents. This cuts the cure time from three weeks or more to a day or so. Raw linseed oil does not have these curing agents. However, the raw version takes a long time to cure.
Uncured linseed oil finishes can turn rancid. That may leave an unpleasant tast in the dog's mouth.
Tung oil usually does not have the drying agents. However, it's hard to find true tung oil.
In any case, check the label for cautions and warnings. One common caution is that the rags used to apply the finish are be prone to spontaneous combustion.
If you have a good wood-working store nearby, ask them about materials used for wooden salad bowls. A common one is called Behlen Salad Bowl Finish. It's FDA approved for contact with food.
Here is a link to the Rockler catalog. The Butcher Block Oil, Salad Bowl Finish, and Toymaker's Finish look promising.
