A friend emailed me to ask about a moose rack that has been weathered for a year, and whether or not it's safe to give.
Does anyone know about that "weathered" part? I'm wondering if that would mean "brittle" the way it can for a marrow bone that has dried and hardened.
I know Leerburg makes a point of saying that they sell "high moisture" (fresh, but cleaned and sanded) antlers. http://leerburg.com/1302.htm says "Our antlers seldom splinter because they are fresh," and that makes me think that fresh might be important.
A friend of mine gave me a moose antler that had been in her garage for at least 5 years. My girl was an extreme chewer who could destroy a black kong in about 30 minutes. This antler she worked on for at least a week before she made any kind of serious dent in it. It didn't splinter; just small shavings came off it.
