My GSD is 6 months old. Will I benefit from the 8 weeks to 8 months video (being that my pup is 6 months) or should I opt for a different video?
Also, I have recently started implementing leash corrections with a flat collar. Verry light corrections seem to get the point across. Is my pup to young for leash corrections?
Samson will be a family pet. My wife and I have a 7 year old son and a 3 year old daughter.
Corrections are being implemeted mostly for:
Barking at other dogs (this is our number 1 issue)
Mouthing (my wife mostly)not bitting.
Failing to comply to sit command when greeting new people.
We are currently enrolled in a puppy manners class wich is coming allong great. Our class has not incorporrated a clicker yet but we are marking with a "yes". Samsons basics (sit, down, stay and COME)are improving daily. We are now increasing the distance before giving a command. His recall is great so far (I am afraid the day will come when he will not COME on command).
Our ultimate goal is to train Samson to the point were he will obey commands from anyone in our family and have a rock solid recall.
At his age, I would recommend no corrections yet. He doesn't have the maturity to understand correction. Also, corrections are best introduced after a command is fully understood both in a training situation and real life.
I think you would absolutely benit from the video but buy The Power of Training Dogs with Food. Are you marking and treating every time you ask for a command still? If he isn't complying, I'd highly recommend it. Also, work on a "quiet" command to help with the barking.
A 'drop it" or "leave it" command will come in handy for lots of things, to include dropping foreign objects and putting his teeth on people. "No" will also come in handy.
Most importantly, teach him what behavior is expected (or not) before you start correcting.
