I was reading Tracy's beautiful tribute to Luca and had to look away from the computer for a moment. I looked to my left and blinked hard - twice. Before I knew it, Caterina was in my lap offering herself to make me feel better.
It got me thinking- we take such simple things for granted much of the time.
Simple things like a paw on your arm when you are feeling sad.
Simple things like the rattle of the food bowl on the floor of the crate.
Simple things like the click of nails on the hardwood floor at 3am as Toni takes a tour of the house ready to do battle with whatever threatens me.
Simple things like a routine vet visit -
It's those simple things that we take for granted that I think I would miss the most when it's gone, yet barely think about when they are happening all around me....
So, I guess what I am saying is don't take anything for granted. Cherish every moment you have with them. You never know when it will be your last.
A very poignant reminder, Kelly. You're so right. I know I'll be facing the loss of one of mine in the not too distant future, so just looking at her every day is a reminder to me to make sure she knows how much she's loved.
Then there's my younger boy who likes to pester me when I'm working by laying his big, heavy head on my hand as I'm typing. It doesn't upset me, though, and I'm reminded of another dog who used to do that who is no longer with me and is greatly missed.
They're all with us for too short a time, and while I try not to dwell on that fact, I do try to appreciate each and every day we have with them. As you said, sometimes it's the simple things that mean the most.
