I trained a cat to use the toilet. No litter box for 9 years. Dogs peeing indoors suck. Teaching them to do so just seems wrong. Yes, it's convienant but hey, dogs are usually an inconvienance so I'm used to taking them outside no matter the weather.
My old Lab Mokie had a sensitive stomach and would throw up bile at the drop of a hat. She always found the rugs when she had to puke, and it got to be seriously annoying when I was constantly washing rugs.
So, I taught her to puke in the tub. Since it was mostly just bile it was easy to wash down the drain and bleach the tub. It all started because when she started the puking process (you know what I mean), it was easier to get her to the bathroom (tile floor) than it was to drag her through the house and down the stairs to get outside. I just took a couple extra steps and heaved her into the tub. Mokie figured it out real fast and it worked for us.
I paper trained the Pinker as a pup to pee in the bathroom. I got him in December at 8 wks, and in Minnesota, well, it's just a drag to take a tiny baby out every hr, and it can be dangerously cold.
99.99999% of the time he goes outdoors, he is very clean. But last week when it was -40 windchill I discovered a dried pee in the shower, first time in years.
I hope he doesn't make a habit of it, but I really didn't mind.
Kelly...I taught my chow mix to puke in the trash can! If ever she ate even the tiniest corn chip fragment shed wretch conveniently at 4am...I'd wake to hear her heaving and make her put her head in the trash can in my room. After a while I just said "NO! Go to the trash can!" and she would.
A tired dog is a good dog, a trained dog is a better dog.
