Need some advice. My Dobe girl helga gave birth to a litter on 24th dec 2013. It has been almost 2 months since and Helga is not very happy about the pups suckling her for long.
A few days ago , Bommi (my rajapalayam female) started being restless and now she has taken over the pups. She is being mean to the other dogs when they come near the pups, and she whimpers constantly when the pups leave her.
I have a female Leonberger who is 7 this year and intact. She has NEVER been bred, yet has looked after 3 kittens and a puppy that have come into this house, even cleaning them while they suckle off her.
I actually had to wean the kittens off her because she would not do it and I was worried I would have 5 year old cats still nursing off my dog. So I started crating her to create a separation until the cats matured.
So I would say maybe it would - especially if she is having any symptoms of false pregnancy, but it wouldn't be a guarantee.
Either way, if you have no plans to breed her, she is obviously a mature female, so for me spaying would still be an option.
I would think not, some of this pup nurturing is learned behavior. As pups age it is pretty normal (in my experience) for the mom to spend less and less time with them. If your other dog is intact and the pups attempt to nurse off her a lot she could start producing milk, I've seen that with an older dog who took over mother duties from a very young mother.
My animals are not "like" family, they ARE family.
If you are not going to breed her again I would spay her, and Helga too. It will help a great deal with this type of behavior, though it may not totally eliminate it. She may still nuture small mammals, may build an occasional nest, mother a stuffed toy for short periods.
Can you show a spayed dog? In some places, showing is only for breeding stock.
She's such a lovely dog, Ram. She's smart and beautiful. It seems the world could use more dogs like Bommi --- though finding great homes for pups is always a problem.
Betty>> I know you like bommi, I was hoping you would see this post
I do not participate in confirmation shows. Confirmation does need an intact female.
I participate in obedience , which does not care about intact or neutered.
She used to get a little bit moody after her heat, but this time the fact that there are live puppies running around has confused her very much. And yes, she is giving milk to the pups.
She is a great dog. She is extremely intelligent, and so soft and expressive. I love her to bits, but I cannot have an other litter from her. So I am going to be selfish and just get her fixed. I will give her a week or two for the hormones to fall down and then fix up an appointment.
My Caterina has never been bred, but when she was at the kennel everytime there was a litter she would milk up.
She was spayed almost 2 yers ago now, but Caterina will mother every little critter there is- she found an injured kitten once that we took care of until he went to the Bridge- Caterina never let him out of her sight and was quite distressed when he died.
