I don't have the yard, money or time to adopt or foster right now. I do, however, have a couple of spare days per month that I use to volunteer at Southwest Michigan German Shepherd Rescue. I get to spend time with the dogs, take them out for walks, help out with socialization, training, etc.
The people there are great and I love every minute I get to spend there. I also donate when I can.
They also have an Amazon.com "wish list" so you can see what items the shelter is in need of and purchase them. Amazon then ships it directly to the shelter. You should check and see if your local shelter has something like that set up!

Right now I am not set-up to foster....but like Betty, we buy a bag of dog food for the animal shelter, who is participating in distribution with the local human food bank. (If you can feed your dog you are less likely to turn in in to the shelter.) Or I try to help out friends who are fostering with some $$$. Like so many of you, I would like to do it all, but know that I can't and take comfort most of the time that my small efforts make a difference.

Guilt and/or grief will get you nowhere.
I read.
I read all the posts.
Thank you all.
I really wish the world wasnt packed full of homeless dogs in the first place. where do they all come from?! Maybe a mandatory spay and neuter law would help?
We all wouldnt be going through this if all these poor dogs were not being pts every week. Its horrid.

It wouldn't help, people who disregard laws are the ones who are irresponsible with their dogs...just like bank robbers don't care if handguns are made illegal. Plus its not fair to those of us who are responsible and don't want to neuter for health reasons, breeding or sport dogs.
A tired dog is a good dog, a trained dog is a better dog. |

The health reasons (particularly for many males) against neutering are compelling.
For me, the owner's inability to prevent accidental pregnancies trumps everything else, and the dogs of owners who cannot guard 100% against this need to be altered, IMO.
But yes, otherwise I agree with Tresa completely.

I know there was a thread on this info! How can i find this info?
I could use a print out!
I have heard some states have mandatory spay neu. It seems like every area has different outcomes with the law.
Im happy to see a psot from you connie, i have missed you over the week and wanted to thank you for helping me with my dogs diet. Shes doing well.
MOD NOTE: Good! (I don't want to hijack.)

Spay and Neuter (long-term health pros and cons)
(And I want to say again that for me, the absolute ability and unwavering commitment to prevent any possibility of accidental pregnancies trumps everything else. Absent that, keeping intact dogs is the very height of irresponsibility. JMO.)

Here's a nice option! "Zeutering"! https://www.embracepetinsurance.com/hot-topics/zeutering-vs-neutering
Retaining some testosterone without motile swimmers. Win win, at least we hope so (absent years of data it can be hard to be sure). Shelter pets can get the injection before they even walk out the door and the costs of rehoming shelter pets could go down.
It's not available everywhere, but where it is available I'd certainly want to give it a shot.. (pun intended)

Second edit: Petsmart has changed their policies and now will not allow any unaltered animals at their adoption events, which is a major issue for shelter animals that cannot be altered until there is an adopter signed up. So that's yet another problem for rescue.
