My husband is a cancer surgeon. Recently, we were talking about "cancer cachexia"-- what everyone has seen in family members, or in pets. The patient is still eating, but the tumor is growing, and the dog or person just gets thinner and thinner.
I asked my husband about this, and he said that even when patients are given IV nutrition, total parenteral nutrition, certain cancers have growth factors that divert the patients nutrition resources to the cancer itself, away from the patient's healthy tissues. In fact super-nourished patients may actually die faster. The loss of appetite that we see may actually be something that buys time.
I just thought that was interesting in a creepy scary way.
I was reading the other day where a study showed that antioxidants actually promote tumor growth with some cancers as they start protecting the cancer cells.
