If you have tile you may need to place carpets in the "take-off" areas. Just make sure they are securely taped to the floor or have effective anti-slip backings. They have discovered that loose throw rugs are one of the biggest slip hazards for senior humans and dogs are no different. Boots are also a possibility if he has trouble getting enough grip to push himself up right.
Seniors are great. Those older dogs don't need much but give so much back.
Any chance that you can swim him?
My parents have a bad hips and knees dog who has stairs for the bed. It took him almost a week to even touch them and probably a month for him to use them consistently.
