I have been working on recalls with my 16 week old German Shorthaired Pointer puppy, Cannon. We've been working in short sessions and also at random times inside the house and outside off lead in the fenced yard. I'd like to start working in different locations on a long line. He pulls quite a bit on the leash with a flat collar. We're working on "nice" loose lead walking during separate sessions, but I'd like to get a harness so that one, he doesn't get used to the pressure on his neck during regular non-training, get the energy out walks, and two, he doesn't jerk himself around by the neck when he runs out to explore at the end of the long line when we are out exploring and practicing recalls. Any suggestions on what to look for or avoid in a harness? I should mention that my two adult dogs, now passed, which were adopted as adults were always walked on harnesses as they pulled so much with just a flat collar. We didn't use the "no-pull" type harnesses, just a padded step in and a standard walmart harness, but they pulled much less with them on. I've heard from several people that using a harness will actually make a dog pull more? This wasn't the case with our dogs and any advice along that line would also be welcome. Thanks in advance!
A basic padded step in harness is probably a good choice. I use one with my pup for similar reasons. As long as you're proactive with engagement and training then a harness shouldn't lead to pulling. I.E. just don't let your pup get used to pulling while in the harness and you should be able to take advantage of the benefits without creating a leash pulling dog.
