"Bump" is simply a quick reply (without any additional content) to "bump" a thread back up to the top of the list. It's so a conversation doesn't get forgotten about--even if nobody has commented in the last 24 hours.

As you see, even Bob's "Like this!" post "bumps" the thread back to the top of the "current" list. Any reply does so. And anyone, including the O.P., can do it, so (as Tracy pointed out) the thread doesn't become forgotten by falling off the "current" page.
Mondays and the day after a holiday are the most common "bumping" days because folks train, etc., on weekends, and are often not online on holidays.
