Connie, the dog is crated. I want calm behavior when myself and the rest of the family arrive home. I have been practicing ignoring him until he settles as some people suggested---and it seems to be working very well.
I just did not know that it could be up to 20-minutes for a dog to calm down. He is catching on very quickly. So thanks for that information.
When friends/relatives come over I would like him to have a place to go.
If doorbell rings I want him to sit at the top of the stairs. He does know the basic commands--- down, sit, come and is extremely food motivated.

These are both things that can be easily trained but you need to do it with no distractions in the beginning.
Same thing with the down, sit, come, etc. Get them solid and sloooly add distractions.
If your training with food just be sure you understand the difference between a bribe and a reward.
If the dog needs to see the reward in order to perform then it's being bribed and will have no idea what you asking if the reward hasn't been weaned off of or at the very least not in sight when the comnad is given.
