The vet hasnt examined Tanner yet but after describing his symtoms she feels that he most likely has degenerative myelopathy. I agree with her although I'm still going to make an appointment to have him seen.
I'm going to teach him how to walk on a treadmill as I dont really have an easy place to walk him. I have access to a private pond so I'll be teaching him to swim in a few weeks once the water has warmed up some.
I'm also going to build an agility ladder and maybe some cavelettis.
I really cant afford actual hydro-therapy sessions but has anybody seen any physical therapy videos or descriptions for DM?
Any supplements that people have found to be helpful?
He already gets glucosamine, chondroitin, and MSM. He's at a slim 57 pounds right now so his weight isn't an issue.
Some 30 yrs ago I had a GDS x Dane that was diagnosed with DM.
He started with the wobbling in the rear then went to standing on his turned under rear feet.
For him it went quickly. Just about 6-7 months from the diagnosis to having to put him down. He was 9rys old.
I believe help for this is better now then back then.
He he was an outside dog and at 130 lb and 30" tall care for him was really difficult.
If you can call it good news the vet said there was never any pain including at the end.
He was my first Thunder and seeing 11 yr old, Thunder #2 today starting to walk around with difficulty (HD and arthritis) is hard to watch and brings back a few sad memories.
I took Tanner in for his exam today. He's actually been moving a little better this past week. The great news is that Tanner doesn't have DM!
The not so great news is that the vet isn't exactly sure what's causing him to have his feet slide out while he's peeing and pooping. The vets theory is that he might have some arthritis in his spine that interferes with nerve signals in certain positions like squatting to potty. She said I could do an x-ray to confirm it but as there's not really a treatment for it I didn't feel like it would be worth the money. I might get the x-ray if he develops any other issues. She also wants me to add fish oil to his diet which I've been meaning to do anyway.
I like this vet. She's conservative in her approaches and didn't bat an eye when I told her I'd ordered some generic heart guard. With 3 dogs I don't want to pay more for pretty packaging but some vets would have had a hissy fit. They also confirm with me at every vaccine visit that they are giving the non-lepto combo.
