I have a question and the more opinions the better. I will seek my vets advise as well, but I also feel there are people out there who probably know just as much as vets. The problem is: My boxer female had 11 puppies. Unfortunately she laid on one an smothered it. This was natures way of reducing the litter, I guess. Now we have 10 left and this is their 2nd day on earth. She only has 8 nipples. They seem to be alright. Should I supplement them with a little milk replacer to ensure they are getting adequate amounts, or will they do ok as it? If I should, how much. I don't want to replace the mother, just curious if I should help.
Mark the pups with colored rick rack or yarn and weigh them all. Twice a day if you can. When you start to see a difference in weight, make it a point to put that pup on a tit when you go by the box. Also make sure you are feeding mom well. As long as she is healthy and able to produce milk she should be ok. As they get a little older you will probably need to supplement.
Thanks..I feed a raw diet and plan to start the pups on milk replacer with some ground meat (very little) around 3 weeks, so when they get older, I think they'll be fine. I'm just worried about now. Next question is, how long till mom will eat again? She hasn't eaten since she had the pups and this is the second day. I assume she'll eat when she is hungry. I put her food infront of her 4-5 times a day, but she just pushes the bowl around the floor. I've tried to feed her away from the pups and near the pups, and she won't eat. With it being raw food, I can't leave it out. I guess she'll eat when she is ready.
Your bitch should be very hungry!! I would take her temp. first..make sure all is well there.. and then I would offer her something different.. if she doesn't eat..she can't produce milk.. I would give her some raw ground turkey or hamburger.. and some cottage cheese and hard boiled eggs.. you MUST get her eating.. My bitch's won't eat chicken backs for the first several days after whelping... also if it is just because she is really into her pups ..you might try bringing the bowl right to her and feed her right in the whelping area. I would definitly try to get some cottage cheese and eggs into her....
Thanks Judy....I've tried giving her hamburger meat...She eats like two bites then just pushes the bowl around. I use the bowl she always eats from and tried feeding her in her welping area. I'll try the cottage cheese and eggs and see if that will work. She is definately into her pups. We have to put the leash on her to get her to go outside and she practically knocks the door down to get back in when she is done. We have a vet appt today for mom, and pups to get tails and dew claws removed. I'll ask for more advise there, but ya'lls advise is still welcomed. Just because vets have a license doesn't mean they have all the answers. Heck, how many say BARF is a dangerous diet???
Ok...I just got a call from my wife. The eating problem is solved. She just ate 5 chicken wings and a turkey neck. I guess hunger set in. She's eating now, so the only question left is about supplementing the puppies.
Jason.. I probably would not supplement the pups.. As long as she is being a good mom.. what I do is if there are a couple that are smaller than the rest... I let some of the big ones nurse.. and when the milk starts to come down.. I "unplug" the ones near the rear..and put the smaller pups on.. then I hover and make sure no big guys push the little guys off.. If you have some that are very very small.. then I might tube feed...
Thanks Jody and Angela..Well we had our vet visit today to have mom checked (nothing wrong, just post delivery check up) and the pup's tails docked and dew claws removed. Good thing to because one pup was about to reach the light at the end of the tunnel. We went to the vet an hour early and they tube fed and gave the pup some kind of nutrient shot under it skin. He's doing great now. They also said another one felt cooler and weaker than the others and said to watch it. Well just our luck, by the end of the visit, the little guy was also at the light at the end of the tunnel. They gave him the same treatment and now he's great too...The vet recommended to supplement the two weaker ones for sure, and the others just to help mom. There are 4 that are a little smaller, so I think I will help those and let the other 6 bigs ones fend for themselves. Thank you everyone for your help.
