My 16 week GSD is a fussy eater. Every few weeks he goes on food strike--takes a sniff of his food and walks away. I usually give in by changing his food or adding an egg/and or cottage cheese to make the kibble more appetizing. My breeder tells me (and I know she's right) I'm creating a spoiled brat.
For the past few weeks he was OK on the chicken soup (adult) food, then got disinterested 4 days ago.. After watching him nibble 1/2 cup per day for 3 days I broke down last night and added Canidae and a scoop of canned food. He sucked it down in two minutes.
What can I do to prevent the cycle from repeating?
Your breeder is correct, the dog is getting you nicely trained <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> . The food goes down for twenty minutes, if it's not eaten, then pick it up. I've never seen a dog willingly starve itself to death, so not to worry. And I've seen dogs who will go as long as a week before realizing it's dining choices are what I say they are. Hang tough, however, if you give an inch, then it's right back to square one.
