Just curious what brand(s) of ear cleaner you use on your German Shepherds? Many years ago I used a great product, Chlorhexiderm Flush. It worked as great on all my shepherds. However, a few years back they discontinued the product. I have tired dozens of different ear cleaners/flushes over the past few years and nothing compares to Chlorhexiderm Flush. Two of my shepherds have problems with yeast, with one on Surolan treatments weekly. Just curious what other people have found successful?
Not a dig on you because I have no idea what the situation is.
I think with ear infections to many people do it for a couple of days then stop because the dog may not be shaking it's head anymore or the smell has gone, yadda, yadda.
The treatment has to go full length to make it effective.
I use Oticlens for minor external cleaning. For persistent mite or yeast problems, Blue Power Ear Wash is messy (use outdoors and stand back when the dog shakes out the excess - the gentian violet stains!) but I have found it works really well.
Blue Power Ear Wash
16 Oz. Isopropyl Alcohol (replace with non-alcohol witch hazel if ear is very sore or inflamed)
4 Tablespoons Boric Acid Powder
16 Drops Gentian Violet Solution 1%
Mix together in alcohol bottle and shake well.
Shake this solution every time you use it to mix the Boric Acid Powder. A plastic squirt bottle works well for putting the solution in the ear.
Warm the solution and shake the bottle each time before using. The dogs will accept the treatment much better if you warm it up for them. Flood the ear with solution (gently squirt bottle).
Massage the outside of the base of the ear gently to work the solution down in. Don't let the dog shake it out for 1 minute. The dog will shake out the excess, which can be wiped with a tissue or cotton pad.
Treat daily for 1-2 weeks, depending upon severity of the infection. After the 2nd or 3rd day you can gently clean out the ear with a cotton pad.
