Could someone remind me what a good rule of thumb is for distance of walks by age of puppy for GSD / lg. breed? Either link to a post or by quick description?
I remember no taking her running- but until what age?
How far can ambling walks go? We're in a high parvo area so being careful about where we go for another week or two. Need to burn off some more energy, though.
I guess you want to go on informal walks, letting dog be dog, allowing him to sniff etc. I've learned from an Ed Frawley DVD to allow the dogs to go in front. behind and also go a bit away to sniff or whatever. Though he has to know well the rules. He has to learn, when the leash straightens he will get a verbal command. Either a NO or a HERE or whatever you choose. If once you know for certain that he understands that word. then you can give a physical correction.
First you say NO! or whatever to remind him and it has to come in exact timing, precisely then when the lead straightens, so he can associate those two things.. If he doesn't react on this then you pull him to you, Strong enough, that he remembers it and in future wants to avoid it, Not so strong that he is frightened after the correction. This depends on the individual dog and you will have to find out what is too strong or too weak for him. beginning on a weaker level and increase until you can see this bothered him.
I went with my pups for about an hour. I didn't know at what age to run with them, but knew the liked to run as hey did quite long in the Yard, when chasing each other. So I mixed the wallks with short short pieces of slight running - which I increased slowly -, then ambling again with interruptions on a quiet spot where we made some little fun exercises, which we had already trained at home well. So the walks were also very useful for generalizing those exercises.
As far as I know we shouldn't run much with pups, certainly no intensive jogging and also the walks should be not too long if they are fast, as it can harm the bones and especially the joints, which are still in growing phase.
But of course ithe walk can be much longer if we are mostly ambling and strolling about. and inserting pauses.

And one of our expert members asked me to add a few notes:
No forced running. Short walks. No repeated jumping. Free running on soft surface. Growth plates close at around 15 months on larger breed dogs. No jogging next to a bike etc until after growth plates close.
Do you have the opportunity to go swimming with her somewhere? This is very healthy for dogs, trains the muscles, the endurance and doesn't strain the joints at all. Though, neither all dogs love the water, nor all people. But mostly just a question of getting used to.
