"We both thought there must exist some breeds with such a lot of hair on their feet, so they could easily get caught in some wires, undergrowth etc."
When I showed terriers in breed, obedience and hunting I also spent a LOT of time with them in the field.
I easily could spend a couple of days getting burs and tangles out of their coats in preparation for those shows but no way was I giving up my fun time in the field even with my show champions.
The Kerry Blues in particular had heavily groomed, single coats just like a Poodles.
Wow, I'm getting a bit smarter every day!
Thank's God we have Pits and two other shorthaired dogs. What a work!
But do you know why some dogs have so long hair? Sounds very strange. Why should nature produce such a laborious obstacle? Doesn't make sense somehow. Or is this just the wonderful result of human breeding/selection?
I'll stop now, makes me think about the misunderstandig yesterday. I think, I'm right now getting again an attack of laughter.

LOL, no Nature does Not produce L-O-N-G haired dogs -- Yes, they are BRED by Humans ... Wild canids all have either Smooth double Coats or Short single Coats depending on CLIMATE
Thanks Candi and Bob for the very interesting explanations. Well, well, well, looking at certain deliberately created breeds by humans I ask myself if humans are so intelligent as they think. Big question mark at least for certain individuals. Some agony breedings would even not be able to survive without owner. Same with cats and probably other pet animals too.
Bob, I hope the Show Collies will not get aggressive with jealousie!
some people go even further with making their animal look more beautiful or impressive. When we bought our Pits the breeder recommended us to have their ears cut (shortened), for beauty reasons and because they would induce more fear. I asked her, if then it would not be more effective to remove their charming smile by surgery.
We didn't do it of course cut the ears, we lfind them beautiful as they are them as they are.

Most of the large headed breeds, English bull dogs, Chi dogs, Pugs, French Bull dogs, etc, etc, etc are to the point that few can give birth naturally due to the size of the heads on the pups.
