My 8 year old great dane has developed an epulis that is probably as big as the end of a baby
finger (lower jaw, front). Wondering if there is anything to be done about this. He doesn't seem to be bothered by it but has lost a bit of weight in his back end--probably age-related? Appetit is good. I hesitate to submit a dane this old to a general anesthetic. Thoughts?
And there are many breed-specific G.A . sites (as well as brachy and giant-size, of course).
This one discusses, for Great Danes, the G.A. protocol that I have used for years with my brachy dogs, including seniors -- the pre-surgical lab workup, a dedicated anesthesiologist (separate from surgeon) who monitors the BP constantly, IV catheter in place before the surgery, and in fact, I see the same induction agent, Propofol (deprivan), and the same gas anesthesia, Sevoflurane. (These agents cost more. For me, they're well worth it.) http://www.gdca.org/health/surgery.html
I would also want the surgical staff (including anesthesiologist) to have significant Great Dane experience.
I currently have a 10-year-old Doberman who has an epulis on her upper gum. Hers is more of a thickening of the gum around the top canine tooth, and it is a slightly more reddish color than the normal gum. It doesn't really protrude. I'm trying to remember how long it has been since we first noticed it, and I want to say somewhere between one and two years. In that time, it has not grown significantly.
In my dog's case, my vet recommended a wait-and-watch approach as she also has dilated cardiomyopathy, and is not a good candidate for surgery.
I sympathize. It is a tough decision when we have an older dog, or one with significant health issues, who may need surgery.
