You guys probably already know this, but I recently discovered that you can make your own ‘pill pockets’ for small pills using a drinking straw and happy howies treats. It’s soft enough that the straw will go through the treat; then you just pop out the cutout for the pill by retracting the straw. Make several treats (only one or two with pills) about the same size, get the dog engaged so they are inhaling the treats and bam, pills swallowed!
Can’t believe it took me this long to try that. Greta hates pills and this has made giving her allergy meds much easier. Hope this helps someone else, too!

Glad it works for you because it sounds like a good idea.
I'm still a bit old school and and lazy so I just open the mouth and shove it down.
Always works and it saves me time and energy.

Great idea, Carolyn! Unfortunately most pills I recieve here are too big for a drinking straw. I tried it by throwing the pill in the mouth, but I'm a bad tosser, I t fell into the mouth, but the dogs spit it out immediately. Later on, I had to shove the pill far down, half of my arm in dog's throat. Meanwhile I use sausages, throw two or three without pill on the flor or in the air for the dogs to catch them. The next one with pill and they swallow it.
Small pills I cover with garlic-juice (although you told me recently to avoid garlic. But in this case?) At least they swallow them greedily like a treat.

LOL, marker-train, Marker-Train, MARKER-TRAIN ... My female takes an Allergy Pill twice/day -- I say, "Pill" She runs over to me & just about opens her own mouth, with a minimum of help from me -- I tilt her head straight up in the air & drop the pill WAY in the Back of her Throat, then GENTLY hold her mouth CLOSED till she Swallows & Licks her Lips, while I give a High Value Treat and say: GOOD pill, Adobe !!!

Wow, Candi, that’s pretty impressive! Something to aspire to if this happens every spring.
I did the shove down the throat and offer a good chaser with my last dogs, Bob. It was much less work lol. Might just need to practice with Greta but she’s such a squirmy thing! I’m picking my battles at the moment

I'll work on that with markers with my next dog.
Right now with my 11yr old GSD no pills needed.

LOL, tell me about it, Bob !!! This is my 1st dog who ever needed any Meds (let alone Apoquel at $100/month) -- But at least these pills do the job 100%, so they are well Worth the COST
