Cod liver oil is used primarily as a source of Vitamins A and D. I use this sparingly since high levels of A can be toxic and dogs get plenty of D by spending time in the sun. Liver and free range egg yolks are also excellent sources of Vit A. In the winter I do add CLO to their diet.
Flax Seed oil and/or Salmon body oils are used because they are excellent sources of Omega 3 fatty acids.
In regards to using Cod Liver Oil during winter only.
I was wondering do you do this because your dogs don't get as much sun then for their vitamin D?
I would think in that case people who live where it is sunny year round wouldn't have to use it at all as long as they were feeding liver occasionaly.
