I am looking for advice for Raven, he is a 60lb intact heeler mix and after being attacked by one of our past dogs and several off-leash dogs he has become severely dog aggressive. He will fixate on them and from a distance I can get him to sit but if they get too close he flips out lunging and trying to fight. If they are reactive to him he will even redirect and he has bitten my leg before, if it weren't for the insulated pants he would have drawn blood for sure.
Besides when our dog Martin attacked him, all of the off leash dog attacks happened when my boyfriend was walking him. I would have punted any dog running up if it were me but in his defnese one of the attacks was 2 dogs at the same time. I made a ton of progress with him after the first dog attack and he would at least be neutral towards a nice dog passing by but has been attacked by loose dogs several times since. I have a hard time holding onto him and fending them off at the same time. It's gotten pretty ugly.
He is very high energy and an awesome bikejoring dog but I am afraid to bikejor anymore because of loose dogs everywhere and I'm afraid he would wreck me on my bike if one came out of nowhere or tried to chase us. His basic temperament is like a sharp high strung Malinois that is super pushy like a Heeler but not dominant at all. Hope that makes sense lol.
I am going to join a local mushing club that has safe trails that you can reserve all to yourself for runs next winter after I repair an old dogsled that was given to me. But I still need to deal with this dog aggression problem that I now have and he needs safe exercise for him and for everyone else too. I can not let him off lead because he might attack another dog so the only exercise he can get is backpacking and long line drills with fetch games when I can actually find a safe place to do it.
I am really feeling inadequate here and doubting my own skills after what has happened, is he too far gone? It's so unfair, irresponsible people ruin the world for everyone.
A tired dog is a good dog, a trained dog is a better dog.
