I've heard of Jarrow, Cosequin, and Kyolic. Haven't used any, since Auster mostly gets Solaray and NOW supplements from http://www.vitaglo.com I have seen dogs on Cosequin. It is good but pricey.
"Dog breeding must always be done by a dog lover, it can not be a profession." -Max v Stephanitz
All the clients on Cosequin at my previous job swore by the product. One woman had a pair of adopted greyhounds - retired racers - who were on it full time. She claimed the dogs would slow down and almost immediately begin showing signs of stiffness & discomfort if they missed even a few doses. She was there like clockwork every 28 days.
I don't know about the other products.
Re: storing gels in the fridge, I did it once before. After less than 12hrs in there (at the median temp) the liquid had solidified to where it was almost impossible to squeeze out of the cap. Don't know how this effects the integrity of the product or the dogs ability to absorb it, but I wouldn't do it again.
The reason I would say that I felt that Cosequin is probably one of the better supplements (I'm sure there are others out there) is probably from a purity standpoint. What it says is in the bottle is exactly what you get. There are many supplements on the market that do not actually have the ingredients as stated. That's not to say that they are all like that but I know for a fact that Cosequin is what it says. They also make the human form Cosemin which my husband is on and he swears by it. Do your research or better yet check out the latest issue of Whole Dog Journal regarding supplements as they recently tested many of them and there are some others that also what they say they are. I believe Cosequin was the only one that also included Chondroitin along with Glucosamine in their study, although I'm am not sure. Also for any LE out there,,I receive my Cosequin at cost from the company with no shipping charges so it's a real savings.
I've been using CosequinDS for about 5 years now and I'm very happy with it. Heidi was diagnosed with HD when she was two years old (she is nine now) and is doing well. I actually just ordered some today and I paid $78 for a bottle of CosequinDS, chewables, 250 tablets.
She also receives adequan injections once every three months.
Nutramax is the only company that has actually paid for research on their product, "Cosequin" so they definitely believe in it. The chondroitin sulfate used in Cosequin is of a very low molecular weight.
I used Cosequin for a year. My working dog has hip dysplasia radiographically due to an injury but has never had a problem or symptoms so I really can't say if it helped or not.
It would be a better test in a dog with genetic dyslplasia who has symptoms/lameness to be on it and see if they improve.
I also used to use it for my horses. HOWEVER, what worked even better for a horse I had who DID have arthritis issues was a product from Figuerola called Joint Saver. It is expensive but contains high ammounts of Glucosamine, Chondroitin AND MSM. Cosequin does not contain MSM which is a natural anti-inflamatory and does wonders for a many different things (including allergies)
Anyhow, it is a horse product so I just cut the dosage and feed to my dogs. They are all on it now just for prevenative measures.
As a side note, my injury related dysplatic dog has also been on Adequan IM once a month for 2 years just as prevenative maintenence since he is a working USAR k-9 and really pounds the joints and body regularly.
If you want the bang for your buck skip the orals and do the IM shot. It is the only treatment proven to get to the joints. And.. it breaks down to 10 bucks a month for an 80 lb dog.
