Hi guys and girls once again. I hope this is the right place to post and I really need your input on the hot topic of mine. Few weeks ago i have posted a message in fear biters discussion board, thinking that my dog is developing into one and I stopped my bite training. It appears, that he is not, plus, he may be one of those handler hard dogs. I now know that the bite work was started wrong and he has front teeth instead of back teeth bite. Though not much work was done in this direction either and it has not been proofed.I would like to correct this and bild more confidence and trust in the dog. Is it still possible? (he is very vary of people - not agressive, now he will allow himself to be petted but only not from the back). I would probably think that we should start from scratch. Any ideas or schedules on how to work on this would be greatly appreciated.
It looks like the topic is on the taboo list or either I am on the ignorance list. I hope not. I am sure that you guys, with experience and knowldege of canine behaviour and pschylogy, not once met this type of dogs. If the problem cannot have a resolution it is better to know that. Hope to hear from you.
There are many ways to approach this problem but we certainly don't want to bite train a fear biter.
Here is one approach:
1. Socialize for 6 months (no bitework) and allow the dog to "forget" its old training
2. Have the dog re-evaluated by a competent professional
3. Start at the begining with a tug on a string
4. Use proper presentation and miss-bites so that the dog must commit to the tug
5. NEVER let the dog win unless the grip is full
6. Do not advance unless the bite is correct
Thank you Dave. Yes, we have been evaluated by a specialist and we do not have classical traits of a fear biter but we actually are a hard dog down inside (I hope he would not be too much for me to handle later - he is still 11 mnths old). Unfortunately, my son has contributed to the problem of variness to people. (I am assuming that some teasing habits together with lack of trust have been imprinted, may be I am wrong on that). Now I see what he was missing and missing a lot while being a pup - socialization. I will try to work in this direction. As for the bite work, probably we would go back to tug and see how it will go. Do not want to scare the dog and break him as he has other really good working qualities.
