Matt
You should try to get one of Eds tapes on the subject, or at least read his esays on this site. There are also a couple of articals at schutzhund village.com. But, First you should forget the track! You drop small bits of food in short grass and give rour search command find it, suuck, etc. Do this for a week or so and the dog will relate the command to smelling the food.
Then you must lay a proper begining track. Stamp a good scent pad at the start and put a few pieces of food on the pad. Then as you begin to walk, take short steeps and drag your feet so its like a continuous scent, putting a piece of food in each foot step.Start with a short track. (15 to 20 feet)
Now, standing to the side of the dog take hold of him close to the collar and give the find command and guide the dog so he stays on the track.
Give big rewards at the end of the track. (food, ball, tug, etc.)
Some times its necessary to not feed the night before to make sure he is hungery.
There is much more but that answers the question. Try to get one of Eds tapes on the subject.
