I am currently gathering info on this subject to instruct a course, due to my agency having a problem with deputies not staying a perimeter, contaminating a track etc. If anyone has any info that they could send to me it would greatly be appreciated. e-mail to e_higgins@charter.net or mail to:

They already know better than that...or certainly should. This is really a supervision problem...not a training problem. Get some people at the top on board and seriously comitted to the program and see how fast this stuff comes to a screeching halt!
If nothing else, try and beat it into their skulls that scent IS evidence. Remind them that catches are made at least 50% of the time by perimeter units...not the Canine team that is on the track or the search. And that you can't catch a COW if someone does not close the back fence gate!
Sounds like it's time for some roll call training. This is where you K9 Coordinator really needs to get involved. Like one poster stated, Officer know better than to mess up a potential crime scene. Perhaps some roll call training designed purely as informational on how a dog actually works would remind the officers at the scene.

Any behavior that is reinforced is more likely to occur again.
Thanks guys for the replies. I am aware that it is a supervison problem and so do they. They want me to come up with a SOP so they have something to go by. And the shift change meetings are already in the works just to get things kicked off. Again, thanks for the replies....
