Wow Barbara - 10! I thought I was whacky with my 4 GSD rescues - 2 males and 2 females - they have free roam of my house together including while I am at work, no kennels or crates, 10, I can't imagine!!
My dogs are all very well behaved and know the rules of the house. There is no fighing allowed and no ruff housing within the house. First and foremost; I am the leader. Yes; in reality, I do have a pack of dogs. But so does anyone who has more than one dog. Oh..and did I mention that I also am proud to share my house with cats.
When my male lab was going thru the "punk stage" of life; he took it upon himself to jump on the older border collie while we were all out walking. I immediately grabbed the lab by the collar and planted my foot up his rear end several times to get my point across. The lab at one point turned and growled at me. That was a hugh mistake on his part! I left a lasting lesson impression up his rear end. From that point; the lab would approach the old border collie with kisses and then look to me for approval and praise. The lab has never growled at me again nor challenged my authority.
On another occasion; I had rescued a female chow mix and tried to integrate her within the pack. She showed no interest in befriending any of the others and vis versa. We were all out walking when the the chow mix jumped on the female border collie. The rest of the dogs then jumped in to help the border collie. With a broom; I broke up the fight and started putting dogs in the house. In the meantime..the chow choose to continue her fight mode with another dog. I again broke up the fight and chased the chow off. When I turned around; all I saw was the chow coming at me and my german shephard leaping in front of me to take the challenge and protect me from harm. The shephard finished the altercation and kept the chow at bay until I had rounded up the last dog. The next day..the chow went to the vet and was humanely euthenized. I love my dogs; but I will not tolerate a dog who will bite the hand that feeds them.
No..having this many dogs is not for everyone. I've been blessed with a gift and treasure each individual personality that shares my home.
