My jail commander is wondering if there is any information on utilizing dogs in a jail setting? i.e. cell extraction/contraband/disturbances, etc.
I have worked dogs in the past but they (higher ups) want some sort of written information. Thanks for your help..Ric
I know someone that has placed a few dogs with prisons, shoot me an email with exactly what you're looking for and I'll forward it to her to see what she has to say.

Hello All:
In my department, the dogs at the jail are primarily used for narcotic searches and tracking (they are at a medium to low level facility) because the inmates are out of doors doing various projects. These dogs are "suppose" to be classified as dual purpose, but I know of more than one dog who wouldn't engage a suspect on the street so they sent the dog to work in the jails instead of taking the $$ loss on the dog. I know it's not right, but administrators will do almost anything to save a buck or two.
Regards,
Brandon
We use a lot of drug detector dogs in the state prisons. Used to search cells, work areas etc. WE also use them frequently at the entrance on visitors entering the facility. We have used explosives detectors primarily for weapon detection. Of course we also have the obligatory bloodhounds for tracking. The drug detector dog service is provide by the state police as the prisons themselves have none assigned.

Ric ; most of the corrections setting, mem to high level facilitys have some kind of dogs working in the department ,mainley for contraband control ,either within the facility or at the main vistor entrance . Other dogs used are for aprehending esapees. many facilitys use bloodhounds ,with a mixture of other breeds such as GSD's and Mals. Some corrections have other dog programs within there facilities where dogs are trained by the inmates for assist dogs,or compapions. Feel free to e-mail me i can put you in touch with some of the programs. Thanks Peter
