hi guys,
this is my first time, so i am not really sure what i am doing. but hopefully you guys can help me out with this. I have a 11 mths old blue male dobie. I got him at Kimbertal kennel. When i got him, i didn't know much about the breed or what kind of dog i was gonna get. I saw this blue pup i liked him so i took him. The guys told me how good his dogs are, great temperment...As the dog grew i found out that he had soft temperment, thin nerve. Don't get me wrong, i still love him. But i want to know if it is possible for him to be trained as a protection dog. Because that is what i want.
any ideas guys???
I don't know if that will be possible, I'm very sorry things went the way they did. I'm sure he's a great dog. A Blue Doberman is similar to a White German Shepherd. It doesn't have the right genetic make up for the work. You could however start to slowly learn and do obediance with this dog to sharpen your handler skills or learn new things.
You could keep this dog and get another in the future. Keeping the dog is up to you and is a personal thing. Working Dobermans these days are very rare, the only ones excepted are Black or Red/Brown. This situation your in is what happened to me with my Shepherd. The breeder used odd colors and giants in their breeding stock. It doesn't mean though that you can't get another one in the future.
This is just what I've heard about Blue Dobermans and dogs not genetically lined to do the work. I'm not the authority on this, and I wish you lots of luck with whatever decision you make. It's not your fault, it's Kimbertals and the fact that they offer things that are false such as 130lbs Dobermans or 160lbs Rottweilers. Don't feel like you messed up. Breeders like that should be held accountable. I don't care either for show dogs or people that sell wolves because they tell people they can do things they can't. There are some people who can tell you where to get a good Doberman if that's what you want?

I think temperament is not directly related to color. There have been great Dobermanns that were blue. The color was simply banned by the FCI due to the fact that they had a lot of skin problems, like alopecia, alergies, sunburn, etc...
The thing is the dog is not from a breeding program that focuses on temperament and therefore, getting a good working dog from this breeding is as likely as winning the lotery.
Make sure the dog can handle the stress of protection work before trying it, or else it might bite you or someone else.
Johnny,
Give your Dobe a good training foundation to start. Work from there to the level that he can work with. If he can't make it to the big leauges, be content with the level he reaches.
Becareful of the stress that this type training produces. It's not for every dog no matter the breed, pedigree,or color.

i have not heard anything good about that kennel, comparable with House of Hoyt and HoMike, all basically in it for the $$. Best thing to do is research the kennel before. almost made a mistake w/ Homike until i found out that many of their dogs have been rescued.
a red flag should go up anytime a breeder will let one of their dogs go to someone that 'doesnt know much about the breed'.
i do not believe that kennel shows or works any of their dogs so temperment will be a toss up. which is risky with this breed.
good luck
I also haven't heard one good thing about Kimbertal or HOH. Another kennel to steer clear of is Amaris. All these kennels claim to have such great Dobes with great temperaments and yet they don't show or work their dogs like DOBE mentioned. They don't honour their guarantee. I know that Kimbertal also ships their pups to multiple breed kennels. I think they're full of crap and they only breed for $$$$ and don't care where their pups end up. To me that is total BS.
thanks for your input guys. i guess i have to wait to see how good he will turn out to be. any you guys know any kennel that have good working lines in the eastcoast?
The only kennel on the east coast that I can think of that produces strong working Dobes is Von Asgard Kennels. They are in Florida. They have some really good working dobes.
Blitzkrieger Kennels and Leidenschaft are also good if you're looking for Dobes from strong working lines. They are in B.C. Canada. Look them up and see if you like what they have to offer.
