Anyone have any experiences with anal bleeding in Dobes? The pup is watched constantly, and has not devoured anything that might hurt him. I did notice that when he took the bite from the GSD the other night that there was some blood on the tile, I just figured that it was from the bite. Now he is somewhat bloated, and last night I saw some blood on a stool, this evening he is bleeding from the rectum slightly. He seems a little lethargic too. I call the vet, and he says go ahead and bring him in monday morning. Does ANYONE have any idea about what could be? I thought about gastric torsion, I am feeding him canned food tomorrow to try and loosen his stools up. He has access to fresh food and water 24/7, unless he is sleeping in the kennel. He has been showiung outstanding growth, eats like a champ too. Any ideas?

Blood in the stool, bleeding from the rectum, lethargic, bloated, I would disreguard your vets advice and get him to an emergency clinic now.

Went to the Vet, no foriegn objects in the X-Rays.That is good, did not think that there was anything there to begin with.
You REALLY have to love those vets working the weekends, $250.00 to walk in and get some X-Rays and get told how dobes have notoriously sensitive stomachs. Could be anything, from stress of last week, to his food. I'm still taking him to the base vet on Monday.

Kevin,
So what did the emergency vet say? That is worrisome. Not everything shows up on X-rays, ie: sticks, corncobs, cloth.
Did he test for parasites? Now you got me worried!

No parasites, no socks missing, I did the inventory just to be sure. My GSD knows that "he" (the GSD) is not allowed to mess with clothing, and he will usually correct the pup for picking up something like a towel or rag. Sounds funny, but Luke really seems to be intent on letting him know what he is not supposed to grab. We'll see on monday I guess, I'll take him to the vet onbase. We have some REALLY good Army vets onbase, for the K9 units. And best of all, they charge me nothing for merely looking him over. We'll get to the bottom of it. Last time I'll go out in town for an emergency, unless one of them is dying or something. The pup is not lethargic today, he is flying around.

We see stress related problems like blood in the stool here at the kennel. We don't always see the stress in the dog though. It's easy when the dog is having a hard time of it to understand, the ones that don't show the stress freak you out.
I am smarter than my dog, your just not. |

What we have narrowed it down to is STICKS. Since this incident the pup has been watched constantly, he is prone to try to eat just about anything so you really have to watch him. What I have found is that he might have a small incident within a day, following chewing up a stick. If I go through the yard and totally clean up any foriegn debris such as sticks, rocks, etc. , then he never has a problem. But let him lay around and knaw on a nice hard piece of oak, and then I'll see some blood in the stool. He goes back to the vet on the 12th for a lyme vacine booster, and we will discuss this again then in some detail. He has been in a few times as it is, since the base vet doesn't gouge me, I tend to take them in to see him whenever there is a problem at all. My wife is studying to be a Vet too, so she is constantly watching him, as is actually HER pup.
