I have an 8 month old American Pitbull Terrior with an unusall amount of Defence Drive. It is starting to become a distraction in training. Any ideas on how to deal with this.
She isn't destracted in the bitework. It is in the O.B wear her deffensiveness becomes a distraction (ie Strangers,Strange dogs, out of place objects.
P.s I have sochalized the crap out of her?
It's up to you to show her what is acceptable behavior and what is not. A dog is not trained until it obeys under all distractions. This is accomplished in step by step training where distractions are introduced and increased upon success.
If the dog is showing defense in situations that are, what I would consider normal, then you are looking at a nerve issue. Just an idea. You had better get a handle on that behavior, if that is what it is. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
APBT's and distractions are ALWAYS an issue in any dog that is going to be seriously trained. In the OB and stuff, even with distractions, if you work with the dog to pay attention to you and only you, and then do what you are telling or showing it to, you should have very little problem. Try attachment training while you are doin OB stuff, ie attach a VERY short leash to a belt loop or utility loop on your belt as you are going through the basic routines. Try to keep the pittie's head up and focused on you until you tell it to do different, and this will help it perform its major function and that is pleasing YOU. the OB is just a by-product. After getting far with this approach, then try it without the short leash for a while, and use NO praise at all when distractions come up and praise profusely when done correctly.
I would disagree with distractions being a nerve issue....APBT's have ADD, not bad nerves...LOL
