Hi all I just adopted a 2 year old GSD mix (age Approx) from the local SPCA I have only heard him bark twice one bark each time I have heard him whimper 2 nights in a row when we go to bed for only about 5 minutes dog not allowed upstairs so I know he is able to make some noise this dose not seam normal Vet appointment on 09/14/02 but till then any advice would be helpfull thanks and yes I have tried to get a frustateing bark to no success
well i have had him for 3 days as to why i want him to bark well when someone rings the door bell or comes into the back yard it would be nice or when playing it would not be to bad. Total silance from a dog just seams a little strange
Some breeds are just not barkers - so depending on what your dog has mixed with GSD it could be that. Also it might take a little more time and bonding before he decides it's his turf and family and has a reason to bark for. Some people wouldn't see non-barking as a problem though so be careful what you wish for! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
3 days isn't long enough for the dog to feel responsible to guard his new territory. Give it a few more weeks.
If he barks at all, you can later teach him to bark on command.
For now, focus on bonding w/your new dog and don't worry about the barking thing. Some dogs are more territorial than others and that brings it's own set of headaches. I'm starting to really like my quiet one.

After that, you can start a thread about getting your dog to bark on command if you wish. Some dogs catch on very easily, others just don't ever seem to want to bark. In your case, the dog is still getting used to things with you. Thread closed.
