I was talking today with a person that was in the National for WDA. There seems to be alot of anomosity that the USA team did not compete last year. The drift of it is that WDA is trying to use this as wieght in the process of the World Team selection process. The person I spoke with stated that they would have no probelm with competing with USA's best but the travel is an issue. It cost's alot of money to fly to what, three trials around the country. That in itself is not the biggest issue, but when you know that two spots are pretty much filled already, your odds get stacked in your favor. Now wheather or not this is the case, I am not saying, but this is an image that needs to be shaked from USA. While mess from the politics may be cleaned, the smell still drifts around.
The AKC is nothing more than a registration body. It would be the responsability of the GSDCA to recognize schutzhund. Riiiight! They are going to jump right out and show us what crap they have been breeding the last forty yrs.
Pete Felknor said "They could also quit granting registration to litters from puppy mills.
Pete the AKC makes money from their registrations. If they lost the puppy mills in my state alone (Missouri) it would be a big loss in money. They dont register these puppys intentionally, I hope, but there is little control over them. When the problem is brought up, the AKC falls back on "We are only a registration orginazition" The JRTCA(Jack Russell terrier Club of America) will not register litters, they only register 1yr old dogs, and only after a vet has given a clean bill of health, free of genetic problems. If the dog has some genetic problem,(my Pete has a high toe which is genetic),the dog can still be recorded but not registered. This allows the dog to enter shows and performance events. It's not perfect, but it goes a long way to get rid of defects. As in working GSD's, the true hunting people breed worker to worker and yes their are some damn good looking working terriers.
I'm only asking cause I'd rather have you kick me in the ass for asking stupid questions, than get splinters under my finger nails from scratching my head.
The WDA in my view, is really for hard-core schutzhund people an oppertunity to compete in the World Cup that don't want to do it through USA for whatever reasons. I don't know much about the club level, but that is because there is not much going on.
When the Paul Meloy scandel came around, it was an out from USA, but still having the option of being in the WUSV and still being in a GSD thing. But now that things have changed, I doubt that the WDA will gain any popularity as it is an affliate of the GSDCA which is a puppet of the AKC. How the WDA came about, maybe some of our other "poster's" know.
The only way WDA would grow is if USA was not allowed to be part of the United States selection process for the team that goes to the WUSV, which I doubt will happen.
As a rule of thumb, you can count on seeing only a few quality dogs in the National, where there are always a few good teams. TO simply state that the dogs that compete in the WDA are not as good as the USA dogs is simply not a fact, There are weak dogs in there, but USA has there share too. I know of a few strong teams that are going to Europe this year, and can give any of USA's dogs a run for the money. But do not get me wrong, USA is by far a better organiztion than the WDA. Thier mission is where USA's power lies. I just think they have fallen off track a bit. USA has the abilty to change, I doubt that the WDA ever will surpass USA in anything, let alone the production of working dogs.
The goal of the GSDCA is not to produce a true working dog. At least that is the goal of USA.
