Does anyone have an answer for this. My bitch has bad mastitus in one gland. The puppies are 4 weeks old and were already weaning. My vet wants me to force her to continue feeding the pups but my bitch runs away - she has sores from their nails (even after cutting) and teeth too. The vet said she will get mastitus in the other glands if she doesn't continue feeding. I'd like to help her dry up her milk instead, if this can be done. Advice welcome!
another thing you should do.. a few times a day.. is to hot pack the affected area.. I take some very hot water in a bowl.. and a wash cloth.. and pack the area... for about 5 minutes each time. When the cloth cools.. put it in the bowl and warm it up again..
To dry her off.. you will need to limit her water and food intake. If you don't let a pup nurse on her.. you should strip that teat out manually.

On a personal note , I have had mastitis 2x while nursing my 4 kids and it ain't fun. I had to take antibiotics and CONTINUE nursing to help drain the breasts and cure the infection.
While I have no dog breeding experience, I would think biologically the idea is the same. Good Luck <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
No one ever said life was supposed to be easy, life is what you make of it!!
Thanks everyone. I logged in and got your replies at a desperate hour last night when she was her worst. Your advice relieved her distress (and mine!) and I'll follow up the rest (anti-biotics etc) with the vet.
