hi,
i was talking to my grandfather today and he said that the local police department where he lives just got a trained italian shepherd. i haven't seen anything on one of these and thought someone in the group would know something about these. he also said the department paid $30,000 for the thing. sounds way expensive to me. isn't that a bit much?

30K for a police dog is a joke, unless that includes a handler course and training support. . .in which case it is still high.
Call me crazy, but I think if it is a Pastore Abruzzese I would really wonder what the hell that department was thinking.
Is there any possibility it was a GSD imported from Italy?
There is a type of dog called the Pastore de Mallorquin. They are very interesting dogs. All round farm/herding/guarding types. They have drives and characteristics like the traditional K9 breeds. My training partner has one, little black merle thing with a lot of teeth. Looks like a smallish Lab with a long snout.
But it is really a Spanish breed, but can be found in all of the nearby islands. Sardinia, Canaries, Balearics, and who knows where else.
Again, if by some lucky guess that is the breed. . .what the hell is that department thinking?
italian seiger maybe? i've seen ads where people try to promote the sale of their dogs by blowing this clear out of proportion. show dogs often command a higher price, but as we all know, is no indication of working ability. its just that folks who don't know anything about shepherd lines are often suckered in by this and thinking they are really getting something. that would be my guess.....italian seiger.
if there are no dogs in heaven, then when i die i want to go where they went. ---will rogers

People pay that much (and more) for top sport dogs. If the dog was acquired through a broker, that could tack another 10-15K to the original price. There is no rhyme or reason to dog pricing. It's whatever the market will bear.
thanks for the ideas, i am going to try and look up the article on it. i called my parents and they confirmed what he had said and went on to say that the article pointed out specific differences between a gsd and this breed. anyway, $30,000 seemed steap, but maybe not.
thanks again.
