I highly recommend the following book which Ed sells here at Leerburg: Protection Dogs for You and Your Family by Edward Weiss, M.D. and Tom Rose ($13.00). It's easy to read. Nicely written and very informative.
I remember saying something in a thread about the book months back. I'm glad you read it too, Vince. I think it's the best out there, no doubt. I wish many people from Amazon.com, Barnes&Noble.com, etc. would take more of a serious look at it. It's much more practical for the beginner. I think many books sell for the name and the appearance of the flashy cover. I know that sounds ridiculous, but I think it's often true. Info like this needs to be put out there more, not Manstopper. LOL
What I love best with the book is it's not about teaching you as much as it's about preparing the reader for what they need to know.
I wish some of the experts on this board and the others in this field would consider writing a few books. I would also like to read one that had a very opinionated view. Why certain breeds are good, why some aren't, and why some are no longer as successful with performance.
I read one book just for fun titled “Pitbulls and Tenacious Guard Dogs,” I hated it. It was just about as bad as Manstopper, but I will say one thing good about the author, at least he put his opinions out there and had some criticism on some issues with different breeds. I think writers in the dog word need to put that out there more. Long story short, I liked his idea on how he put the book together, but not his opinions in the book. I would like to see an author put out several breeds and talk about them in detail, talk about drives, genetics, myths, facts, what really separates a regular dog and one with incredible ability. It wouldn’t have to get into training, just basics, weight, diet, rules, standard times, safety, etc. Basically to follow a pattern similar to his in form, but put the real info out there.
