I just got this book by D. Caroline Coile, Ph.D. today from Amazon.com.
Has anyone else got it and what is your opinion?I think it's a good reference book that you can dip into at any time - it also has some brilliant photos <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
I remember buying PC's for Dummies years ago when I got my first computer- that was also a good book
They have now got dummies books covering Pit Bulls, Rotties, Siberian Huskies and many more!!!
I like the Dummy books and the concept of writing a "peoples" book using simple language to explain complex topics. . .
But the GSD/dummy book blows. If you have never seen or read anything about the German Shepherd Dog you might enjoy it.
There is a decent explanation of Schutzhund, that takes up all of about ONE PAGE in the training sections, or was it the fun things to do with your dog?
It is a simple book but then I'm a simple person

I'm one of these people that has to buy GSD books and thought this one would be fun. It's my birthday next week so I thought I'd treat myself.
Seriously it has a small section on "Perianal fistulas" - I know 2 people who have lost young dogs to this condtion and another whose dog is still alive but struggling! I've not seen this mentioned in any of my other books
I can't say as I would recommend the -For dummies series on dogs. The majority of the information included is fairly general and is used throughout the series of books (just substitute dog breed).
Having worked in a library for 11 years and been an avid reader and book collector myself, the -For dummies series was for me most valuable as a beginners technical resource series dealing with computers and computer programs.
They are riding high on their popularity and are still good sellers, but if you want a good GSD book I'm sure many out there could cite a bunch for you.
Again, the breed rescue guy in me is coming out here...
If you are a DUMMY, you have NO BUSINESS owning a German Shepherd Dog!
Sorry, but I had to say that <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" />

OK everyone......nevermind the GSD's for Dummies, when I was waiting for Bella to be born I too went to the library.....I bought :
The Complete IDIOT'S Guide to GSD's !!!!!!
OK OK stop laughing now!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
Guess what???!!! In the back of that book there is an appendix B called can't get enough, and it lists books, organizations, magazines, videos and web sites of GSD realted info. That is where I found this Leerburg site from!!!
And I found the book to be pretty funny while being informative!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
No one ever said life was supposed to be easy, life is what you make of it!!
All the "Idiot Guides" and "For Dummy" books are *very* simplistic overviews for whatever topics they address. Most serious dog trainers would be better served by reading the GSD classics.
The Leerberg dog training book list contains most of the important ones.....check'em out.
