What if you put something inside the kong to divert his attention for a while. Maybe that would make it last longer.
Also, have you tried upping the amount of exercise they are getting? Excessive chewing is a frustration based behavior in my experience.
I typically fill the Kongs with peanut butter. He licks it all out within 30 minutes or so. As far as excercise goes, he gets worked on the SchH field/K-9 training/or tracking 4-5 days per week.
And that doesn't count the miles and miles of running the dog does daily when we run, mountain bike, swim (I kayak, he swims) or cross country ski almost daily. The AD was just a warm-up for him before a "workout" .
He's just a high drive dog with jaws of steel and the need to ALWAYS be doing something. Great for work. Not so great for just sitting around the house during downtime .
My parents didn`t know what the breeder meant when she said her dogs were bred to have working ability.I think you`re right about it being frustration chewing. He really doesn`t have a lot to do around the house except play with the other dogs or chew up his toys.
This is kind of off-topic but what kind of obediance do you need to start a dog in tracking?
A note on the nylabones. Gave one to our then 5 month old puppy because she was teething. She ate the top knuckle off and it got stuck in her rectum. Needless to say, no more nylabones for Elea. Gave us quite a scare since the vet said if she didn't pass it on her own she would need surgury. Once she finally did get it out, he had to check her thru the rectum for any damage. Not a happy puppy at all. It toook about 5 hours for her to be able to pass that little piece and it drove her nuts.
