I saw this on another board and am curious as to what the working folks thought. To be completely honest, I know nothing about working dogs, or American Bulldogs. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> But I am curious. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
SchH is one of the many factors folks use for determing if a GSD is breed worthy.
Questions asked were:
1. Should all GSDs to be bred, have SchH titles beforehand?
Laureen I've seen a catch dog trial. MOST of the people there were inbred idiots. Natural hog hunting with dogs can be sporting. I rank catch dog trials almost up there with dog fighting <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" /> . JMO.
The American Bulldog is a large, somewhat cumbersome breed ,compaired to GSDs, etc. They are more of a guard dog type, and the prey drive is nowhere near that of a good GSD, Mal,etc. As with any breed, There are good and bad. They have a tremendous problem with bad hipps. They are also big in weight pulling. The only "protection" type of test I know of, is the dog runs at a helper, and the helper determines what dog hit the hardest :rolleyes: . Doesn't show me much. Even in the catch dog trials, the APBTs dominate them.
There are much more knoweldable people on the board that could give you suggestions for a breed worthy test for the guard breeds that work more in defence than prey or fight.

Not quite sure where you got your info from... but most ABs work exclusivly in prey.

Also... (sorry couldn't edit it add this to my other post!) .... ABs actually, generally make crap guard dogs. There are probably less AB guard dogs than there are GSD. They are a very people loving/people sensitive breed.
I think, for what its worth as I have most recently been exposed to the AB by one of the best, that all breeds have their aplications. The idea of one "Wonder Dog" breed is rediculous at best. The AB is a majestic animal in the same regard as an old standard Boxer, Rottweiller and the like. I would no sooner step onto the Schutzhund / PSD arena with an AB than I would walk into the catch ring with a GSD or Mal but that is not to say that there are not AB's do very well in SCH. The dogs that I saw exihibitted in Phoenix some weeks ago were beautiful specimens and those (two-leggeds) involved in the breed were participating in an awesome variety of activities.
