Hey guys, I need recommendations for books on breeding and genetics. This topic never interested me too much before but now that I'm dealing with so many pedigreed dogs, Sch- you know what I mean...I think it would be beneficial to really get a grasp of the intricasies. I was a vet tech so even textbooks would be of interest to me. I love research and now I've got a new excuse to buy more books and do more reading! Any good suggestions? (I'm especially interested in GSD, too. So even books that deal specifically with certain German pedigrees like Fero, Lord would be appreciated.)
I don't think you're going to find books on modern working dogs, but if you do, for sure let us know!! As far as breeding, genetics, and especially the GSD, there's two books that are must-have's (except they're out of print). Malcolm Willis' "Genetics of the Dog" and "The GSD: The Genetic History" are absolutely fabulous, if you're willing to pay big bucks. They are for sale used, but VERY expensive. I'm glad I got mine as soon as they came out!
I am in the middle if reading Scott and Fuller's Genetics and the Social Behavior of the Dog. I think I will have to buy it, since I will not be able to finish it before I have to return it to the library (too many college textbooks ). The first 1/3 is interesting .
I bought Alcock's Animal Behavior for an animal behavior course, but it doesn't mention dogs and I wouldn't recommend it unless you have way too much time (it was interesting but mostly about birds).
"Dog breeding must always be done by a dog lover, it can not be a profession." -Max v Stephanitz
I was recommended a book by a person who is a geneticist with animalbreeding as his speciality. The book is called "The genetics of the dog", published in 2001 and written by A.Ruvinsky and J.Sampson. The authors has knowledge about both genetics and vetmedicin. This book is the latest and most comprehensive book about genetic diseases and problems in dogs.
There's so many garbage books out there we can't list them all. When you see one you're thinking of getting, post it and ask what people think about it.
