To quote Willis in "The GSD: A Genetic History" - ...it is highly probably that all are SS. Certainly Irish spotting (si) and piebald spotting (sp) alleles are absent."
SS refers to homozygous for self-colored or non-white. The common white spots on chests and toes are caused by some minus modifiers, but those dogs are still homozygous SS.
However, in breeds which do carry the Irish spotting allele, it is recessive to self colored, but dominant to both piebald and extreme white.
Hey this "Irish White Spot"... what is this? My pup has a distinct white goatee on his muzzle, two white toes, and a white strip on his chest... Could this be a result of this gene?
