understand...my post was to teach a "trick"...like shaking...no real applications, but I will say...when unknowing people want to 'pet' my dog during the middle of 'obedience' training it will get them to rethink the idea. To clarify, distractions are important but some people can be way too persistent at my dogs level of training. And yes we're currently working on it
The trouble with growling is that it's a reflection of an emotional state, a bit like yawning. So if your dog is growling, your dog is in that state of mind which leads to growling, unlike barking which isn't tied down like that -- dogs can bark for any and no reason.
It wouldn't be a trick: if your dog growls it's because it's on the defensive and would like that threat to back off. You don't want your dog to growl unless it's a really serious threat. If it can be elicited by ordinary folk, then when the real bad guys show up, your dog will be overwhelmed.
Some dogs rumble when they're happy and that can sound like a growl. You can condition that. Some dogs smile and show their teeth, you can condition that too, but growling for real...if you succeed it could come back to bite you in no uncertain way.
And I don't know about you, but you can't pet a barking dog too readily...
I know a girl that taught her dog to "smile" by holding a lit cigarette under the dogs nose. The dog would show his teeth because he was scrunching up his nose. Mix that in with barking and it will make people nervous. Of course than you have to put a Nicotrol patch on your dog for a month afterward. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
It would be common knowledge to assume a growling dog is much more apt to bite be it out of fear or defense. I for one would be more alert with a dog that growl.
Hopefully no situation arise that would require a trained dog to bite. So if possible, a growling indication is a very good deterent when barking is not appropriate at the moment.
That's my reasoning behind trying to train a GSD to growl....
