ok, I am trying to decide what type of floor to use for a 6x4 kennel. I would like to put concrete, however I am renting the house so I dont think that would be wise. I was thinking of just putting down brick so that I could remove it when I leave. Someone suggested putting playground sand down. would the sand be ok? Any other suggestions ?
dogs love to dig in sand. My dogs think my indoor arena is a big ol' sand box. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> Ed has an article on "sprucing up the backyard kennel" on the main site and has used the concrete patio pavers with sand beneath for a more temporary flooring solution. The dogs can not dig out and it is fairly easy to remove.
If you lay a foundation of sand and then use those tiles, you still may want to seal them together with cement. Otherwise you will have sand comin through the floor.
If you dig out the earth and then put down one of those no-weed cloth barriers, the breathable ones, then place the tiles down it works better for a temp kennel.
I'd nix both ideas in favor of smooth pea gravel, or pebble stone. Dig down a good 12+ inches and fill it up, bracing as you go with one of those waterfilled hand rollers. Then in the corner of the kennel where you put the dog house, build a cedar platform to put the dog house on and a pad for resting on. That is what I did for my 3 dog kennel before I built the real deal.
I liked it because I could just change the gravel if and when it got yucky. I also put down those weed=guard things under the gravel.
6'x 4' isn't big enough for a kennel that the dog is going to spend any amount of time in IMO. Not even close buddy. Is there a reason why you can't do a bigger one? Try like 10'x 6'.
thanks for the advise. I do agree 4x6 is small but she is only kenneled up for about 4 hours a day. Once I buy a house I will increase the size and lay concrete for the floors.
Take a look at this link for outside kennel flooring. It's first time I've seen this product appear on the web, and seems aimed at rentals, temporaries etc. http://www.kennelfloor.com/kennelpricing.html
Being a tile layer for 30 years, and dog owner too I agree with the Concrete brick with sand under it, and a sand & cement mix swept into the joints. It seals them and doesnt allow water to penetrate it and errode the sand bed. These bricks are 20. a piece and can be picked up and moved when you move. You can add to them later in your perminant location as well. Lets face it, snow and all the mixed bag weather we have in Wi/Mn area we need less mess when the pooch's come in, and we need to level the area most of the time as well.
