I take my dogs for a brief walk at 1pm yesterday and outside of an apt. (main floor) I hear loud barking. I think nothing of it. Why would I?
I take my dogs for a brief walk at 4pm today and outside is a crying (same dog). I now think something of it. On the main floor of a bldg. around the corner was at 1pm a once vibrant cocker spaniel, now his/her face caked with ice and it is shivering like I have never seen before. Barely muffling a cry.
I call animals services..."oh sorry maam, we don't check out complaints"(they are 5 mins from here).
I then call my shelter. No problem, except they are 45 mins. away.
I race back to see if I can get over the balcony and get the dog. The I stop and realize....I could be charged with trespassing. As utterly ridiculous as it is, that would be my reality.
So I lie in wait.......
I mean..HOW STUPID IS STUPID???????????
Did I mention it is -39 with the windchill?

I went by, the dog is laying there, dead. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" />
I have never been more sad....ever <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />
That is sickest story I've heard in a while. Why these people don't have the backbone to take the dog out and shot it is beyond me. Meaning the act would be more humane. They apparently don't mind it suffering like that. Dog fighters are much more humane than people like this. That applies also to the trash that dump dogs in the country.
I'd have the name of that trash, foul mother____ who did it, and send it to EVERY animal nut on the web.
I could accept nothing happening legally to these type people on ~one~ condition they should be tagged and never be legally allowed to own a dog ever again.
Animal Control can be extremely frustrating and useless at times. I recently got a ticket for training my dog in the park. She had a leash on and the only time I was not holding the end of it was if she was in a sit or a down. The officer snuck up on me and watched me do almost my entire BH routine, waited until I put the dog back in the crate and then charged me with having my dog off the leash. I yelled at him to go punish people who are abusing their animals instead of harassing me for training mine.
Second story, I temporarily lived in an apartment last year and one day when walking the dog early in the morning in the dead of winter I noticed a pitbull outside on the balcony shivering uncontrollably. Luckily the sun came up and when I checked on him later he was ok. I wrote a NASTY but to-the-point letter to the owners and nervously stuck it on their front door. The next day the dog was gone. Don't know where he went, never saw him again, but he wasn't shivering on the balcony anymore. I suggested APBT rescue in my letter, hopefully that's the route they took.
My point is, animal control will not always act in the best interest of the animals. We need to act on animal abuse cases when we see them, weighing the cost of trespassing to the benefit of saving a life.
