Well I got home last night, I keep my 4 month old Dobe in a 4*3 wire crate. The problem is, I'm gone for 9hrs a day, as I work a full time job, so I don't have time to come home. He usually only urinates in the crate, but he rips the papers up, last night he crapped and stomped through it, it was everywhere. He seems to be a bit of a dirty dog, as they say most pups will not sleep where they dirty, well he will, why and how can I stop this. Should I let him out of the crate and just block off a portion of the room. I can't even put a bed down for him beacuse he'll tear it up and it would be full of debris. It is very frustrating but I'm sure most people that have pups work a 40hr work week.
Can anyone give me some good info, should I let him out of the crate and use it just to block off the furnace so he can't get in there.
Thanks
Oh ya, I have him in the Laundry room/furnace room.
I let him out when we are home, in the morning I go outside with him after he eats to do his thing and then bring him back in and leave him at the front door where he can see us, till we are ready to go to work, he seems fine when I put him in as we try to do it on the weekends to keep his routine up too, just about half the time though as we go out hiking with him in the early afternoon.
Any info would be helpful.
Liam : sounds like you are having so much fun with your pup. But sometimes when a pup has been rasised with a female that may not have been clean or the pups had no or not much training in the potty area before they are sold ,takes them a little while to get it all togeather . First i do not put anything in the crates , as pups they will soil more if you do this . As you are gone so long i might want to have a place where he is able to come out and not have to walk in a soiled area all the time .Also you might want to work out when you feed and water him ,but you are gone so long and he may just not be able to hang on that long . No pup can go that long without doing something. Let him into a bigger area, because once he learns to live in his mess it will be almost impossible to house train him.
What about buying a couple of astro turf squares for him to use and bleaching them? It would be good if you could put the squares in a kid pool or on a tarp, but he might destroy those. Does he have toys? There are indestructable dog toys that you can buy and not have to worry about him eating them. That way he has something other than the paper to play with You also need to bleach the crate pan and surrounding area and wash his feet off after he has to walk in it. Keep a big bucket of slightly soapy water in the basement to wipe his feet off if you have to.
