Lisa, I agree, but as David pointed out, if the guidance isn't right (poor training director at shelter), you could go in the wrong direction. Expierence and correct guidance would be a BIG pluss first.
Depends on the shelter. Some shelters are so strapped for cash, they don't have a "Training Director". They're just grateful for anyone to come to the kennel and take the dogs out to the exercise yard and toss a ball or give them some cookies.
Lisa,The training (and my own instincts)I had before I helped at the shelter was a big plus. MANY of the other volunteers, unfortunately, were just dog lovers that didn't have a clue about what makes a dog tick. However, they were great for the walking and playing you mention.
A shelter or resuce may be a good place to learn to read dogs but you need to know what you are reading first. A shelter or rescue would be a better second stop but not the first.
Stop making excuses for your dog and start training it!
